What should be checked on site
During an inspection, the review should not be limited to the most obvious mark. The surrounding wall helps show whether the visible condition is isolated or part of a larger transition, moisture or bond problem.
- whether the crack widens, branches or returns after previous repairs
- signs of staining, softness or efflorescence near the crack
- control-joint and panel layout
- movement at windows, doors, additions and roof lines
- interior drywall clues that suggest broader movement or moisture
